PAM SPEARS

While Pam is speaking mostly about the type of Godly, spiritual love that she shares in her ministry, running like a river through her via sparse piano and a stripped back gospel-meets-rock ensemble, there is an underlying, universal current of heartfelt acceptance and reconciliation in the nine tracks. A collection Spears herself calls “redemption songs.”

“Music comes from the spirit wanting to heal,” PAM reveals. “It’s the language of God. And I think that — and this album — is all about love. Love and the freedom to be who you are created to be. To not be afraid…because every person has a purpose and a gift. I hope this album encourages others to step out and do what they are called to do. Look at me — in my age, it just goes to show that it’s never too late.”

The child of a single mother in the 1960’s South, Pam Spears learned early what both hard work and unconditional love looked like.

“My mom was a single mom, when there were no single moms,” says Spears. “She was an extraordinary Lady living in extraordinary times, and had this incredible gift of love.” Memaw, as most people call her, worked 6 days a week, and every morning before she left she would be by Pam’s bedside kneeling and praying. “I feel this incredible gratitude for that.”

The song “Mother’s Prayer” reflects Spears’ grateful spirit, and connects past to present — today, Pam has four grown children of her own who all show up in one way or another on the album, especially in the track “Family Song,” where each Spears child (and Pam’s husband) gain an alter-ego, all chosen to highlight their uniqueness.

CHILD OF GOD

This jubilation, joy and utter awe in expression is clear throughout every song on Child of God. Praiseful tunes like “Prodigal Son” urges the listener to return to the source of love in their lives to find fulfillment. “You Want Me to Do What?” speaks of finding the courage (and then exultation) in doing what you’re meant to do, even if it scares you to your soul. And “My Feet Are Dancing,” serves as an homage to feeling victory in every part of your body. If anything, Child of God is both a peek into a life well-lived and loved, and that love turned outward — Pam Spears throwing her arms around the world.
